Palm Desert and the surrounding Coachella Valley offer a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and modern leisure. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures, memorable dining experiences, or places to relax and unwind, this desert destination has something for everyone. Here’s my curated list of top things to do, including must-visit spots for both first-time visitors and locals looking for fresh ideas.
12. Shields Date Garden

Highlights: Famous date shakes, a historic date garden, and casual outdoor dining.
Why Visit: Established in 1924, Shields Date Garden has been a local icon for nearly a century. Their date shakes are a standout treat, blending fresh dates into a creamy, refreshing drink that’s perfect for the desert heat. You can also take a peaceful walk through the date garden, which is open to visitors. The on-site café offers breakfast and lunch with outdoor seating shaded by date palms, providing a casual and pleasant dining experience. It’s an ideal spot to embrace the local flavors and history.
11. Nobu Indian Wells

Highlights: Upscale Japanese-Peruvian cuisine in a sophisticated setting.
Why Visit: Nobu is synonymous with high-quality dining, and the Indian Wells location lives up to the name. Situated inside the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, it’s an excellent choice for a date night or special occasion. The sleek design and ambiance complement the expertly crafted dishes like Yellowtail Sashimi and Black Cod Miso. Despite being located within a tennis venue, it’s open year-round and offers a dining experience that feels far removed from the tournament crowds.
10. DSRT CLUB
Highlights: A trendy spot in La Quinta with top-tier food and a lively atmosphere.

Why Visit: This is my favorite restaurant in La Quinta. DSRT CLUB offers a perfect mix of style and substance, featuring creative dishes made with fresh, quality ingredients. Whether you’re celebrating with friends or seeking a memorable meal, this place delivers. The chic, modern decor adds to the experience, making it a destination for both great food and a fun night out.
By the way, you have to try the Octopus, its really a treat!

9. Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar

Highlights: Stylish rooftop cocktails bar and views of El Paseo.
Why Visit: The Tommy Bahama restaurant on El Paseo is more than a dining spot—it’s an experience. The rooftop bar provides fantastic views of the shopping district below, and the menu features island-inspired dishes alongside classic options. It’s a great place for happy hour or a laid-back dinner after exploring El Paseo’s shops. The atmosphere is upscale but welcoming, making it suitable for any occasion.
8. Indian Wells tennis garden

Highlights: World-class tennis venue and event space.
Why Visit: Home to the annual BNP Paribas Open, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is a premier destination for tennis fans. Outside of tournament season, the venue often hosts concerts, exhibitions, and other events. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the modern architecture adds to its appeal. Even if you’re not attending an event, it’s worth visiting to admire the facilities.
Last but not least, you can play tennis on the practice courts for $100 for 2 hours. You can call the pro shop for reservations: (760) 200-8200
7. Palms Springs Aerial Tramway

Highlights: Breathtaking views and access to Mount San Jacinto’s cooler climate.
Why Visit: The tramway takes you from the desert floor to the alpine environment of Mount San Jacinto. The views during the ride are incredible, offering a unique perspective on the region. Once at the top, you can explore hiking trails or simply enjoy the cooler temperatures and scenic vistas. It’s a great way to escape the heat and take in the natural beauty of the desert and mountains.
6. Coachella Valley Preserve – Thousand Palms Oasis preserve

Highlights: Peaceful trails and a rare desert oasis.
Why Visit: This preserve offers a serene escape from busier parts of the Coachella Valley. The trails are surrounded by towering fan palms and natural springs, creating a stark contrast to the surrounding desert. It’s an excellent choice for a morning hike, especially if you enjoy photography or birdwatching.
Note that a storm has destroyed the trail in 2023 and it is being slowly rebuilt.
5. Pioneertown

Highlights: A quirky Old West town with live music at Pappy & Harriet’s.
Why Visit: Originally built as a film set for Western movies, Pioneertown has evolved into a charming destination. The old-time architecture and dusty streets make it feel like stepping back in time. Don’t miss Pappy & Harriet’s, a local favorite for live music and hearty food.
4. Palm Desert Aquatic Center

Highlights: A family-friendly pool complex with water slides and lap swimming.
Why Visit: The Palm Desert Aquatic Center is the perfect spot to cool off during hot desert days. It features pools for all ages, water slides, and shaded lounging areas. Whether you’re looking to swim laps or simply relax by the pool, it’s a refreshing escape for families and individuals alike.
3. The living desert zoo and gardens

Highlights: Explore desert habitats and see animals up close.
Why Visit: The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens combines wildlife conservation with education and fun. Visitors can feed giraffes, watch cheetahs in action, or stroll through carefully curated botanical gardens. It’s a family-friendly attraction that’s both educational and entertaining.
2. Cove oasis trailhead

Highlights: Short, scenic hikes with beautiful views.
Why Visit: Located in La Quinta, the Cove Oasis Trailhead offers a relaxing outdoor experience with several short hiking trails. These well-marked paths are perfect for all skill levels, making it an ideal spot for families or casual hikers. The desert views are particularly striking during sunrise or sunset.
1. Joshua tree national park

Highlights: World-famous rock formations, unique desert plants, and incredible stargazing.
Why Visit: About an hour’s drive from Palm Desert, Joshua Tree National Park offers some of the most iconic desert landscapes in the U.S. From hiking trails to boulder climbing, the park is ideal for adventure seekers. Stay after sunset to experience its pristine, star-filled night skies.
